Unlike underground cable installation, pulling in conductors can generate considerably higher pulling forces, which must be absorbed by the overhead line grips.<\/p>\n
For this reason, stronger strands and a three-strand mesh are required. However, to ensure that the overhead line grips remain flexible, the mesh is graduated into 3 sections in accordance with the distribution of pulling loads that occurs:<\/p>\n
Section with 1-strand mesh – for absorbing low loads and establishing the friction-locked connection<\/p>\n
Section with 2-strand mesh – for absorbing higher loads and further establishing the friction-locked connection<\/p>\n
Section with 3-strand mesh – for absorbing the full load and fully establishing the friction-locked connection<\/p>\n
The resulting self-clamping effect gives the overhead line grip high slip resistance on the conductor.<\/p>\n
With a crimped rope eyelet for conventional rope pulling; however, due to their rigid ferrules, these overhead line grips are not suitable for pulling over traction sheaves, capstan heads or Figure-eight brakes with diameters of less than 1000 mm. There is a risk that individual strands of the outer layer may be levered off directly at the ferrule.<\/p>\n
Random samples of the overhead line grips are submitted to an independent rope testing laboratory for tensile breaking tests.
